In Mu-Ki-Ra, we follow Cleo, a 13-year-old girl, and her little brother, Martín, as they navigate a world plagued by monsters that attack at night. When Martín is kidnapped, Cleo embarks on a daring journey into the jungle, accompanied by an elderly witch and a mischievous anteater. As she braves the dangers, Cleo discovers that the monsters are not as monstrous as they seem, challenging the audience's perceptions.
Estefania Pineres Duque, the driving force behind this project, shares her vision: "Mu-Ki-Ra is a celebration of the light and a reflection on the darkness within Latin American childhood experiences." Her goal is to create a story that not only represents its cultural background but also uses music and visual elements to comment on it, connecting with children who share similar experiences.
Duque's previous work includes the Netflix psychological family thriller Delirio, as well as writing and story editing credits on Palace and En diciembre llegaban las Brisas. These projects showcase her talent and her impact on the industry. Ábano Producions, based in Galicia, Spain, is led by Chelo Loureiro, a five-time Goya Award winner, known for her work on Valentina and Unicorn Wars.
